Normandy, France

We spent a wonderful yet emotional weekend seeing the historical locations of D-Day. This was a Boy Scout event but was opened to all scouts of all nationalities. This year
is 70th anniversary of D-Day. We camped on the cliffs overlooking Omaha Beach. We visited Utah Beach, Pointe Du Hoc, and Omaha Beach. We laid flowers on graves in the American Military Cemetery. Heather’s grandfather’s (Carl Huff) and great uncle’s (Harold Marvin) units came ashore at Utah Beach after D-Day. The 157th and the 166th Engineering Company. Don’t know if they actually crossed the beach but it was moving to think they might have been there. We changed our plans on the return trip and took the ferry out of Cherbourg so we could see where Mark’s uncle’s (James Sowma) unit, the 79th Infantry, helped to liberate the city.
